How do you generally pay on online websites? Most would say, through cards, online wallets or simply cash on delivery. However China being China, the inventive one, would like to have another payment option and that is VR. Yes actually, Virtual Reality!
The virtual reality revolution has already begun and the future is going to be much more than just games and entertainment. Alibaba, fondly known as the Amazon.com of China, is already working on taking VR in use for its sales and business benefits. They plan to craft a new payment method that enables shoppers to make payments while wearing their virtual reality headsets. An online portal recently reported that the feature will be called VR Pay and will allow people to select and purchase items from virtual shopping malls by using simple gestures like a head nod. So, this is how it’ll work – First, VR Pay verifies the user’s identity, which can be done via linked account logins or through voice recognition. Then, setting up a password to authenticate payment will be needed. This password could be a touch, head movement, head gesture, or just staring at a point for a few seconds on the display.
This sure sounds great but don’t you think can be niggling? Nodding at products on a virtual shop shelf would be a mess if someone accidentally nods at the wrong product and would end up buying a lot of things they didn’t mean to.
By-the-way, VR Pay isn’t the first innovative thing to come from Alibaba. In 2015, Alibaba had also introduced this unique payment method which apparently, was based on facial recognition and was called “pay with a selfie.” Following Alibaba’s footsteps, Amazon is also all bucked up to take advantage of the recent shopping trends and has started working on a selfie payment method. In the US, Amazon already offers a voice recognition payment option on its Amazon Echo device.
Here in India, VR continues to get less expensive and is anticipating making inroads into the consumer space really soon. We can expect to see more applications for the technology in the nearing future and everyone’s excited for it.
